Chapter Ten

Aishe

I winced when Morgorth slammed the door behind him and stomped down the stairs. I blew out a breath, thankful I hadn’t felt any buzz of magick in the room. Despite Morgorth’s wild emotions, he hadn’t activated his magick. Small blessings. I would have been forced to dive under the table or bed if they’d started to fling spells around… not that it would have done me much good.

I turned from the door and glanced at Ulezander. He’d set his elbow on the table and had his head in his hand, covering his eyes. Feeling for both of them, I leaned forward and placed a hand on his other arm. He sighed but didn’t move.

“Please don’t give up on him,” I said softly. “He wouldn’t… he needs you in his life, even if he would never admit it. You owe him that.”

I kept my tone as gentle as I could, not wanting to kick him while he was down. But I also needed him to understand I would always back my bondmate, even if he was acting like a stubborn horse.

A small smile curved Ulezander’s lips as he lifted his head and dropped his hand. He met my gaze, looking more like a frail old man than I’d ever seen before.

“I’ve never given up on my son. And I never will.”

My heart pinched as I nodded. I thought of my own father and mother and yearned for them.

I stood and paused. “I have a question for you.”

He nodded.

“When I healed those soldiers… my light has always been yellow. Healing light is always yellow. But this time it was… gold. I realized the color was the combination of my yellow light mixed with Morgorth’s eyes when they turn amber with magick use. And I had more energy to give. I healed far more soldiers than I would have been able to in the past. I have to think it has something to do with our bonding. What do you think?”

Ulezander stroked his beard and stared at me, his gaze pensive. “I think you’re right in your suspicion. Unfortunately, I don’t have much information to lean on. I’ve never known a mage to go through any sort of bonding ceremony, let alone the dialen one you took. But I don’t see it as something to worry about. You bound your lives and your spirits together. It is not surprising that there were… side effects. For want of a better term.”

I nodded, unsatisfied but resigned. I gestured toward the door. “I’ll go find him. We need your help.”

Ulezander sat back in his chair and stared at the wall. “Take your time. I need to think a moment.”

I left him and found Morgorth brooding in the corner of the common room. He had his feet crossed at the ankles on the table, his arms crossed at his chest, and was glaring out of the window. The innkeeper was giving him the stink-eye and gave me the same since I’d stolen the extra chair. I’d promised to bring it back but she’d only grunted and spat.
